EMERTON COURT COMPETITION FIRST ROUND v. EAST DEVON
The first leg of the match was played at East Devon on Thursday 5th April, Captain Phil Ollis reports
“In what is a very difficult draw the team managed just one win achieved by Colin Parr and Roger Field (2 up) but that does not tell the whole story all the games were real challenges with Crediton showing considerable fighting spirit before having to succumb to a team of single figure handicappers. There were just two players in the East Devon team that were not single figures and they were 10 and 12 whereas in our team our lowest handicap is twelve. The one victory gives us a little hope but it could so easily have been a little better Rick Eidam and Wally Phillips staged a come back from 5 down only to be robbed by an outrageous chip (16) and a very lucky putt (18). The team will be prepared for another challenge next Friday knowing nothing but a four one win will be sufficient and even then that may not be good enough. Good luck.” - The full result of the first leg appears here East Devon Emerton Court Result (away)
The second leg of the match was played at Crediton on Friday 13th April – Captain Phil Ollis reports.
The Second (home) leg was played at Crediton with the sun shining. Both Clubs were fielding similar teams. There was one change in the Crediton Team, Roger Field was unavailable and reserve Herbie Smith was brought into the team and replaced by Dennis Wright in the reserve pair. East Devon had two changes and also juggled their team Bill Norris (5) and Mike Wisdom (10) were out and Alan Dewhurst (12) and John Thatcher (15 – reserve 1st leg) came into their team.
Colin Parr, (who had been a winner away) and Herbie Smith were up against an in form pair and knew their fate early going down 6 & 5 they were given little opportunity to mount a challenge. Meanwhile Cyril Dawes and Graham Pateman established a good lead and never gave their opponents a chance to draw back and were first to record a win for Crediton. Tom Berry and John Essery followed closely by Steve Lay and Mike Charnock were next to finish recording 1 up and 3 & 2 victories respectively. The final group,Wally Phillips and Rick Eidam were battling for the much needed fourth victory to send our lead pair (John Essery & Tom Berry) down the 19th. They were all square leaving 14 but unfortunately lost 15 and 16 and at dormie the Crediton challenge was over. East Devon were assured of the half point they needed to win and go forward into the next round. There were some anxious East Devon faces when the leg had gone to 3 games to one and some relieved faces when news got back from the 16th green of the final match. The match was alive almost to the wire, it was a brave attempt to reverse the away leg result and we are entitled to be proud of our teams performance against a very good East Devon team. Thanks also goes to those who turned out to support the team over the final few holes. East Devon Emerton Court Team Home Result
Both games were played in good spirit, East Devon now play Teign Valley in the next round, we wish them well.
