Seniors Opens & Invitation Events
THE 2012 DOWNES CREDITON SENIORS OPEN (14TH MAY) was successfully completed in varying conditions the early starters had the rain and a little wind and the later starters had the gusting winds but thankfully no rain. The course was in very good condition and attracted many complimentary comments, our thanks go to Nobby and his team for all their efforts. Eventually we had a field of 47 Visiting and 35 Home Pairs, making a total of 164 competitors. There were several late changes and I am grateful to those home players that were able to fill the gaps at short notice. Our thanks go to Barry and Devon in the Pro Shop for taking care of preparing and checking the cards. Devon was in charge of the returns and using his knowledge of the rules of golf had to exercise his judgement in referring a few cases to the organising committee. Decisions to disqualify are always difficult but when clear breaches have occurred there is no case within the rules to “turn a blind eye”. We thank Robin Goodey Club Secretary and Kelly their help in the organisation, Robin is always on hand to give advice in difficult rules cases. Lessons are always learned in such circumstances and on this occasion it emphasises the need to check your card before signing and returning it. There was an interesting rules issue on the course it occurred on the 13th when a competitor from the “Tee” hit towards the Railway and was probably out of bounds. He declared a provisional which he hit short of the green, played a second shot with that ball before getting to the green and finding his original ball on the green having clearly either bounced off the fence or trees. He played the original ball and sunk it for a two. The question, was the original ball, the one he sunk, the “ball in play”. ? Eric Parkes took charge of the smooth flow on the course operating from a covert position on the “Spraying” vehicle he recruited a team of volunteers who played important parts to make the day a pleasant experience for all competitors. We thank them all. Colin Cole showed the greatest initiative, something he is not normally renowned for, by turning up on the 12th with a “Stop and Go” board. Unfortunately we had not included on the “briefing sheet”, red means stop and green means go so one or two hit off on red. There were no “driving disqualifications”, the lucky ones got away with a few points on their cards. The event started with a few long faces from those who were not used to getting up in the morning, having been awoken with a startle and a great fear that the “tinitus” they were suffering from had got worse before realising it was the alarm clock. However it was the “early birds that caught the worms” for the home team Colin Ray and Ron Berry, off at 8.10am, returned the best score of the day, 44, and were duly rewarded. Their long faces had turned to smiles and they were there at the end to collect their prize. The best score for the visitors, 42, was returned by the pairing of John Manicom and Jan Roberts from Borringdon. Congratulations to both teams. For the full results click on the link. Finally our thanks go to all those who took part and made the day a good competition in the spirit of “Seniors” golf.
